Neodymium Cone Magnets

Neodymium cone magnets have a shape that tapers smoothly from a flat base to a point or another smaller flat surface.

The base of a cone magnet can be any size and shape, but it is typically circular.

This is the surface that typically attracts another surface.

Description

1. Features
Generally, most applications for neodymium cone magnets are for decorative purposes. For example, use them to stick paper on magnetic whiteboards.
The appearance of cone magnets is an important consideration for this shape. You will see them after you stick them to common surfaces – freezers, whiteboards, and maybe metal storage boxes, etc.
Osenc is a custom neodymium magnet supplier, and we can offer 3 variant shapes for the cone shapes.

A flat base with a sharp point
A flat base with another flat upper surface
A flat base with a chess-shaped knob
2. Dimensional identifications
Usually, the shapes of cone magnets are similar to those of disc magnets or rod magnets. We can follow their dimensional identifications for cone magnets.

The straight distance from the base to the center of the point or the upper surface is the height of a neodymium cone magnet.
The distance around the circumference of the base is called the diameter.
For neodymium cone magnets with a sharp end:
• Diameter x Height = D x H in millimeter
• A cone magnet with a diameter of 9 mm for its base, and a height of 7 mm: D9 x 7 mm

For neodymium cone magnets with a flat end:
• Base diameter x Upper diameter x Height = D1 x D2 x H in millimeter
• A cone magnet with a diameter of 9 mm for its base, another diameter of 3 mm for its upper base, and a height of 7mm: D9 x D3 x H7 mm

The chess-shaped neodymium magnets are more complicated to identify using a single formula. For this reason, we usually prefer to communicate their dimensions using technical drawings (sketches).

You can send us the drawing file in PDF format or any of the common 3D software formats, including Autodesk Inventor, Fusion 360, AutoCAD, or SolidWorks.

3. Available dimensions
Generally speaking, the dimensions of neodymium cone magnets are regular sizes that are well within the most common sizes – tens of millimeters. It’s their applications that determine their common dimensions.
• If they are too big, you can’t handle them properly.
• If they are too small, they don’t provide the expected functions.

4. Grades
Neodymium magnets have different grades, ranging from N35 to N55, and they also have high-temperature designs for special applications.
You can refer to our introduction to neodymium magnet grades. It will be helpful for you to determine which grade is the most appropriate for you.

6. Coatings
Cone magnets made from neodymium are sensitive to the working environment. The humidity and even other corrosive elements can cause them to corrode quickly. Especially, these magnets are highly likely to be touched by fingers, which are more or less corrosive.
To improve the durability of neodymium cone magnets, we will need to apply a layer or even multiple layers of coatings on their surfaces. Meanwhile, this will also make the cone magnets resistant to scratches and other types of damage, since you may touch them from time to time.

Neodymium cone magnets have common applications in homes and offices. And they are usually exposed to regular indoor working environments. These are not severe working conditions, compared with many other industrial applications.
Therefore, the regular nickel coating is a very good choice for neodymium cone magnets. It’s a perfect balance of cost, visual effect, and performance.

However, Osenc can also offer custom neodymium cone magnets with several different types of coatings. They include nickel, zinc, epoxy, etc. Each of them has its own unique properties and benefits.
